Perceptually grounded meaning creation

چکیده
The paper proposes a mechanism for the spontaneous formation of perceptually grounded meanings under the selectionist pressure of a di~rimination task. The mechanism is defined formally and the results of ,~me simulation experiments are reported.

Distributional Semantics in Technicolor
Our research aims at building computational models of word meaning that are perceptually grounded. Using computer vision techniques, we build visual and multimodal distributional models and compare them to standard textual models. Our results show that, while visual models with state-of-the-art computer vision techniques perform worse than textual models in general tasks (accounting for semanti...
متن کاملPerceptually Grounded Word Meaning Acquisition: A Computational Model
We present a computational model for the incremental acquisition of word meanings. Inspired by Complementary Learning Systems theory the model comprises different components which are specifically tailored to satisfy the contradictory needs of (1) rapid memorization of word-scene associations and (2) statistical feature extraction to reveal word meanings. Both components are recurrently coupled...

متن کاملSimple Learning and Compositional Application of Perceptually Grounded Word Meanings for Incremental Reference Resolution
An elementary way of using language is to refer to objects. Often, these objects are physically present in the shared environment and reference is done via mention of perceivable properties of the objects. This is a type of language use that is modelled well neither by logical semantics nor by distributional semantics, the former focusing on inferential relations between expressed propositions,...
متن کاملPerceptually Grounded Lexicon Formation Using Inconsistent Knowledge
Typically, multi-agent models for studying the evolution of perceptually grounded lexicons assume that agents perceive the same set of objects, and that there is either joint attention, corrective feedback or cross-situational learning. In this paper we address these two assumptions, by introducing a new multi-agent model for the evolution of perceptually grounded lexicons, where agents do not ...
